GUIDE TO RETIREMENT PLANNING: IT’S NEVER TOO LATE

Retirement planning isn’t about getting to the finish line or final destination. It’s a new chapter in your life that needs careful planning to make sure you get there when you want and with the means needed to live the rest of your life how you want to.

At Astute, I talk a lot about building a life you want, not just about financial planning for now and the future. Retirement is part of that story. For some people, it might be the dream of travel; for others, it might be about slowing down and enjoying what matters most. Maybe this is spending more time with loved ones, buying their dream home or car that they have always wanted, without the financial worry. Whatever the version looks like, one thing is true for everyone: having a clear plan to make it achievable makes all the difference.

You might be years away from retiring, or you may be counting down the days. Either way, planning ahead helps you take control of your choices rather than letting your current circumstances dictate them.

The earlier you start planning, the more options you have available. That’s because retirement planning isn’t about the size of your pension pot or what assets you own. It’s about building the freedom to choose when you retire and how you spend your time.

Many people put off planning for retirement and only really start thinking about it as the time comes closer. But don’t worry if this sounds like you, as it’s never too late to start planning. You can still make informed decisions, reassess priorities, and look at how your money can work harder for you when the time comes.

Retirement planning can seem overwhelming and something that you don’t want to look into as you fear the worst. That’s why I always start with an open conversation so I can get a better understanding of your circumstances and future vision. Here are a few typical areas we would likely cover together:

  • Your lifestyle goals: What does a good retirement look like for you? More time with family? Moving to the coast? Starting a part-time business? Let’s picture it together.
  • Current pensions and savings: I will review what you already have in place, including workplace pensions, private pensions, and ISAs, and explore how they’re working or not working for you.
  • Cashflow forecasting: This is about seeing the full picture. I will map out how your money will need to support your lifestyle year by year. It’s not about spreadsheets, it’s about confidence and clarity.
  • Tax efficiency: Often overlooked, but so important. I will look at how to make the most of your allowances and reduce unnecessary tax where possible.
  • Contingency planning:  Life doesn’t always go to plan. Your plan will include resilience for the ‘what ifs’ so your future is protected and flexible, not just predicted.

You don’t need to come to me with everything sorted. In fact, most people don’t. My job is to make things clearer, focused, and easier to manage.

My goal is to help you understand what is ‘enough’ and how to ensure that what you have is sufficient during your lifetime. This can mean making adjustments to your existing provision or simply using what you have to make it more efficient. But above all, it’s about listening and understanding your story, your values, and what matters most to you in the years ahead.

One of the biggest misconceptions about retirement planning is that once you have a plan in place, you can “set it and forget it.” In reality, this is something that needs to be reviewed frequently and will evolve over time as circumstances change throughout our lives.

For example, you might sell your home,  you might start caring for a relative, you might inherit money, start a new career that significantly impacts your income, or simply want to change direction entirely. That’s why I don’t just create a plan and wave you off.  I will stay with you on the journey. Collectively we will regularly check in, adjust course, and keep everything aligned with the life you want.

If you’re feeling uncertain, don’t know where to start, or simply curious about what’s possible, let’s talk. No jargon, no pressure. Just a friendly, honest chat about where you are now and where you want to be.

At Astute Financial Planning, I don’t just help you plan for retirement, I help you shape it into something that feels exciting, sustainable, and completely your own.
